BACKGROUND

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated dramatically on February 24, 2022, when Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion into Ukrainian territory. This act of aggression has led to significant human and economic losses, with over one million military casualties reported on both sides, including approximately 300,000 Ukrainian soldiers. The civilian population has suffered immensely, with the United Nations reporting over 12,000 civilian deaths and nearly 27,000 injuries by October 2024. (AP News)

The war has also precipitated a severe refugee crisis, with more than 8.2 million Ukrainians fleeing the country by April 2023, marking Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II. (Wikipedia)

Economically, Ukraine has been compelled to allocate approximately 37% of its GDP to defence spending, a substantial increase reflecting the nation’s commitment to its sovereignty and the protection of its citizens. (The Scottish Sun)

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the Ukrainian people have demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in defending their homeland against unprovoked aggression. Their steadfastness continues to inspire global support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
